What is concrete grinding?

Over time, concrete can wear down, crack and develop rough patches that lead to tripping hazards and an unsightly appearance. Concrete grinding sands down the surface to make for a smoother, safer, more visually appealing concrete floor. It’s a craft that involves using a floor grinder, often 250mm to  500mm or more in diameter with diamond tooling , grinding down on rough concrete surfaces in order to clean and profile the surface for further treatment. 

It’s important to remember that because grinding only removes material from the top layer of the slab. So while grinding serves its purpose and certainly has a lot of benefits, it’s not a permanent fix for everything that can go wrong with your concrete floor.

The concrete grinding process

‍Epoxy Flooring Projects uses diamond grinding to carry out the concrete grinding process. We use a machine grinder with rotating diamond tools to grind into the concrete and wear it away. The diamonds open up the pores of the concrete, remove contaminants and improve the level of  the surface. As this happens, the diamonds inevitably break down but concrete wears away the metal bond around them, exposing more diamonds so they can continue to do their work. The process begins with an initial grind for cleaning and prep then moves on to finer, more precise passess if needed.
